  • How to Actually “Connect” with a Place

If you want to move beyond being a “spectator” and become a “participant,” you have to change your habits:

    • Ditch the Hotels: Stay in a local guesthouse or a homestay. Living in a residential building forces you to interact with the real world—the grumpy neighbor, the local grocer, the cat on the corner.
    • The “Same Place” Rule: Instead of eating at a different restaurant every night, find a place you love and go there three nights in a row. By the third night, the staff will recognize you. This small bridge of human connection changes the entire energy of your trip.
    • Use Your Senses, Not Just Your Lens: We often view the world through a 6-inch glass screen. Try the “5-Minute Rule”: When you arrive at a beautiful view, keep your phone in your pocket for the first five minutes. Look, smell, and listen. Then take the photo.
